Re: “Housing Authority report released

Thanks Max for providing the link.

@Slingerland, You are correct – one role of the housing authority is to serve as a forum that ensures that tenant’s rights are protected and due diligence is done after each complaint in order to prevent discrimination towards minority or low income individuals and families. So no, you can’t just evict tenants without due cause and procedure because it’s against federal law. Since Section 8 is a federally funded program, you do the math. However, I am always amused that landlords never have a problem with Section 8 when they receive their guaranteed check each month, regardless if they are upholding their end of the bargain. For every “bad” tenant, there is a slumlord waiting in the wings that doesn’t maintain their property yet still charging exorbitant rental rates.

Also, The NLRHA is not nearly half the size of the LRHA nor do they serve an equitable volume of people…so that’s not an apt comparison as to how they conduct business. In fact, I am concerned that the NLRHA isn’t acting more strongly as an advocate for the tenants who are their clients and the reason their staff has a job.

In addition, individual housing authorities are part of the city they are in but ultimately bound by the governance of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Got a problem with your housing authority? Then ultimately, you have a problem with HUD…not the Executive Director who is merely doing the job of upholding HUD’s rules and regulations.
