Bruce James Calls the Hogs, Nov. 17

Saturday’s game

Arkansas (3-6, 1-5 in SEC) vs. Mississippi State (2-7, 0-6 in SEC)

Site: War Memorial Stadium, Little Rock

Time: 1 p.m.

Radio/TV: The ARSN network will broadcast the game on radio affiliates. The game will not be televised.

What James says: Ole Miss had a horrible offense, but Mississippi State’s offense is beyond description it’s so bad. We’re playing the two worst offenses in the Southeastern Conference back-to-back. The only thing positive I can see about Mississippi State is the coach, Sylvester Croom. He’s a class act and he’s faced some difficult times working to get that program back on track, but they are not good offensively, defensively or with the kicking game. Arkansas should win fairly easily.

Last week’s first SEC win for the Hogs: The impressive things about it were the fact that Arkansas’s football team refused to quit after being down at halftime, and the play of Casey Dick, the poise he showed, and that Arkansas was able to create a passing game that they hadn’t had all year.

The pick: 38-14, Arkansas.

Watch former Arkansas All-American defensive end Bruce James along with David Bazzel and host Steve Sullivan on KATV, Channel 7’s “SportsWeek” Sundays at 10:30 p.m.

No. 8 Arkansas (10-2 overall, 7-1 in SEC) vs. No. 4 Florida (11-1 overall, 7-1 in SEC): Arkansas will try to offset some of Florida’s speed and quickness on defense with a shorter passing games, screen passes, and running the football consistently.

Last Saturday's game against Tennessee was the most consistent offensively and defensively that Arkansas has played in at least 15 years.

This is the toughest call on a game since I’ve been picking them in these pages. I can find as many reasons why Arkansas could win as I can that South Carolina will win.

I don’t have a great feeling about Arkansas winning the football game.

  • Money talks

Democratic candidates face a dilemma in Arkansas. To take on the GOP members who are firmly entrenched in the state Legislature and Congress, they will need lots of money and lots of votes. The easiest way to get more votes is to spend more money. Obscene amounts of money. And thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United decision and President Trump's judicial appointments, this will be our reality for a long time. The six Republicans who make up our congressional delegation have stopped pretending to care about their constituents. They vote in line with the interests of big corporations and lobbyists. They know what side their bread is buttered on.
  • Gratitude

Now, more than ever, I find myself thankful for those who resist. Those who remind us of our higher common values. The fact-checkers and truth-tellers. Those who build bridges in communities instead of walls to segregate. The ones who stand up and speak out against injustice.
  • Silly acts, good law

It was unavoidable that the struggle by sexual minorities to gain the equal treatment that the Constitution promises them would devolve into silliness and that the majestic courts of the land would have to get their dignity sullied in order to resolve the issues.
