Re: “Churches teaching teachers how to teach religion

Teachers should be careful consumers of what they hear in the church and in all other media. Students have been targeted by both the anti-religious and the overtly religious establishments for a long time. It's important that teachers not throw out the baby with the bathwater just because it comes from a religious source. Take what works, such as the encouragement to love and mentor difficult students. Leave the rest. And don't ever go to anything at a church with the assumption that you are going to get some secular credit, whether that be a tax credit for a contribution or a some professional development credit. Go to churches for the only thing that churches should really offer, a whole different point of view.

And, as teachers, identify with students who might feel targeted and embattled by all the pro-evolution, and anti-evolution, pro-free-love, and anti-sex-before-marriage lobbies, all targeting kids at younger and younger ages and wondering why they seem more and more confused and hostile and too often suicidal. Identify and teach them to walk the battlefields successfully, without resorting to bitterness or guns.
