Not even born in 1957 I can only rely on descriptions of people who lived during those times. An overwhelming population of Southerners were born and raised with the beliefs described in the article. It's simply too easy for us to point out their failures using our benefit of society growth and maturation over the ensuing 60 years. This information and discussion is incredibly helpful to healing and growth as a society, community, and college. That said, I can only imagine in 2062 our grandchildren will be rolling their eyes at our arcane 2012 policies regarding Mexican immigration. We and our institutions will be their pariah.
