Gauldin didn't take guff off anyone. Or at least not without an insidious plot to get even the next day, usually by letting the culprit foul his own nest. And the sly smile that would creep across his face when the inevitable happened. That will remain with me for the rest of my life.

I am risible, easily given to laughing at the littlest thing, but Gauldin's humor almost always made me think, too, after I stopped laughing. There was a moral clarity to his punchline, usually a nod toward tolerance of others, a castigation of bullies, a swift kick to the shins of arrogance. It wasn't enough to be funny; he had to teach people a thing or two while he had their attention.

I couldn't think of anyone better to have in my corner. I'll miss the Great Gauldini.
