  • Judicial intimidation in Arkansas

Sen. Jason Rapert had his big day last week. The Arkansas Legislative Council adopted his resolution criticizing Circuit Judge Chris Piazza for ruling that the Arkansas ban on same-sex marriage was a violation of constitutional equal protection and due process rights.

Re: “Lee's lawyer writes about executed man's last hours

Great way to remind us the people we're killing are actual human beings, not just some abstract "killer" we can dismiss from our minds as unimportant. I have no idea if Mr. Lee was guilty of the crime for which he was convicted, but I've seen enough to know we convict a lot of innocent people. Thanks for telling about this man's final hours.

Re: “Campus carry bill creates expensive, bureaucratic maze that seems likely to apply only to major sports, such as Razorback football

This whole business is so wacky it defies belief. Even more incredible is when someone gets shot who would not have been but for its passage, the gun lobby will scream more guns were needed to have protected the victim.

Re: “A morals clause at the emergency room: Your legislature at work

What poetic justice if Rapert were to appear in the ER & no one would treat him because their consciences keep them from treating demagogic pricks.

Re: “John Walker and another lawyer arrested after filming police

One of the things that keep us from being a police state is the public's right to know how police operate. If they're doing something in public, the public has a right to film it. If there's any question about that, the law needs to be made perfectly clear.

Re: “Jason Rapert: Goes off again on Muslims; erupts again over Facebook edit

The first amendment does apply to Facebook. Or at least rights under the First Amendment do. It's a private enterprise that can refuse to allow tripe if it wants to. The Senator thinks his position in the state government makes Facebook somehow answerable to him. The First Amendment says otherwise.

Re: “Whew, Pig$

While I agree with the overall sentiment that society over-emphasizes sports, I have no problem with the UA's sports budget. The profit might be small, but it does make a profit. The only reason the profit isn't larger is that most sports generate no revenue. The "over-emphasized" sports--football, basketball & baseball--bring in much more revenue than they cost. Ticket revenues are only part of the total revenues those sports generate. The donations don't show up in ticket sales, but those sports are the ones that drive donations. Finally, the Razorbacks are good for commerce. That's a hidden benefit that doesn't show up in these figures. Hotels & restaurants are packed when they play at home. Tour companies along with convenience stores & restaurants along the route do booming businesses on game weekends. Everyone of their sales are taxed. Their profits are taxed. The Razorbacks do a lot for the entertainment & tourism industry in Arkansas, so unless those things are considered, any analysis of UA sports is incomplete.
