By the later 1960s, people where I lived were frightened by the drug culture and cultural uprisings, and hippies and all. Marijuana and LSD use was feared. There was an underlying fear that America might fall apart in chaos and drug use and rebellion. My parents were very very concerned, I remember the discussions at the dinner table when I was 10. And so, when Dragnet episodes went after the drug culture, it was re-assuring. It made perfect sense that Joe Friday would go after this culture, and it was a big seller for many middle class American families.

In retrospect, I agree with the writer, that it was not police work tao take on these things. And societal problems were much more complex than arresting someone, putting on handcuffs and all.
