Re: “Open line, plus some election trivia

When you wake up & wish with all your heart you lived anywhere other than a red state/nation but clicking your ruby slipper heels 3 times gets you nothing.... I want to be a better person and hope he does well for the country because my kids deserve that but all of my being screams for him to mess up so badly no one will EVER vote for a Republican ever again.

Re: “Thursday's open line and video roundup — Asa!

Can't help wondering why all the GOP potential candidates still work so hard at holding onto the South. They have the South pretty much tied up with a bow on it but they continue to build walls between themselves and all the rest of the nation. I wonder if Jeb will venture out?

Re: “Sunday night line: A triple slaying and Trayvon Martin in the news

I think this terrible situation could happen to any teen in any area. I was listening to my 16 yr old grandson proclaim that it was "obvious" Zimmerman was innocent and we all need to move on. I then asked him the following...... "what if you, my grandson, were walking home from the store that is about 4 blocks from your home at about 730PM on a rainy night and some older man, fearful of teens who rob or cause havoc in your community, parked his truck, got out and followed you, scaring the hell out of you, and when he caught up to you, you got into a fight and hit him, but he, being older and frightened, pulls a gun and shoots you, would you still think the shooter was 'obviously' innocent?" If my white grandson died at the scene, the older man with a bloody nose and scrapes on his head would probably claim self defense because he would want to get his own ass out of trouble - he's just killed an unarmed kid - and even with a white kid, I think it is possible the older man might be believed and exonerated. If my grandson survived and could testify, it might be different, but there is a distrust of young men in our society and depending upon the community's collective attitudes and whether or not the kid was well known or a stranger, this same kind of thing could happen and not involve race.

I believe we cannot have private citizens carrying handguns............period. I know we will never get that but George Zimmerman should not have had a gun and the death of Trayvon Martin proves that to me 'beyond a reasonable doubt.'

Re: “The Saturday night line is open: UPDATE — Zimmerman acquitted

I can't help wondering...............if just maybe, the prosecution never meant to win the case, but merely wanted to fulfill a perceived obligation to give the Martins some sort of day in court. I can't imagine that so many errors and stumbles and omissions could have been caused by just simple mistakes??? Maybe they felt forced to "put on" a trial but didn't dare actually win the case??

I couldn't sleep for wondering about that......

Re: “The midweek line: Death Row, Romney, abortion, German, UAMS

The Romney's both drink Lying Ryan's soda pop, I think. She was out there today saying, "lying?" "Lying about what?" "This is what he believes and he's been out there saying this all along." What a liar she is!!!

The Romney's are strange people. If they say it, it must be true, seems to be the way they compute. I wouldn't trust him with the presidency. He's a good snake oil salesman and I've no doubt he could take my $20 and make me wealthy, but he's still a snake oil salesman........

Re: “Sunday: Readers take over

Thanks everyone. It has been a hectic month, but sometime after midnight last night he made it here - showered, shaved and then talked all night - lots of unwinding to do. Probably will sleep most of the day.

AliJB, so good to hear from you - been missing you.

Vanessa - your story reminds me - my son (the one who just got home) is my youngest and around the time I was pregnant with him I discovered watermelon daiquiris and I've never been certain whether I drank any (I'm not much of a drinker so it would have been one here and there at the most) after I got pregnant. I am pretty certain I didn't know the problems of alcohol on the fetus back then, so it's possible. He's a risk taker, high tempered, complicated. I've always wondered if my daiquiri penchant might be playing out here....... On the other hand, he's highly intelligent and inventive - if you need to charge your phone or your laptop he can do it with an air conditioner unit in a prison cell....lol

I have an elderly aunt who thinks she's my son's grandmother, so I have to take pictures in real time so she will believe he is home and in one piece - and there is a family reunion planned for Friday night, so lots of celebrating all around.

It's good to be able to share some good news.

Re: “Sunday: Readers take over

For those of you who read about my son's situation in the Middle East, I am happy to inform you that he landed in NYC at 4 30 PM and is now headed for LR. He's grouchy because he has on the same clothes he left in almost a month ago (did his best to wash them) and he has quite a beard. He feels awful and doesn't want us to see him till he gets to clean up, but all flights booked back to back to get him home asap, so no time..He's also very hungry. I don't know if we will ever fill him up.

But, he's almost home...........hallelujah!
