  • Kenneth Starr: A comment from Betsey Wright

Betsey Wright, former President Bill Clinton's chief of staff when he was Arkansas governor, responds bitterly to a New York Times article today quoting Whitewater Prosecutor Kenneth Starr's warm words about Clinton. She can't forget the lives Starr ruined in Arkansas.

Re: “Nominate restaurants for the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame

Hot Springs 1217 & Colonial. Old, stable and exceptional. Arlington (sigh) once upon a time.

AT needs to do a feature on the Hale gang. Hell of a story that sprouted in the Faubus days.

Re: “ACLU says hot check court in Sherwood operates as illegal debtors' prison

Which brother will live longest in infamy: David or Milas? How did they go so wrong? How did one end up the nemesis of the Clintons, the other the insider. Strange tale.

Re: “Cherokees invest $1 million in casino campaign

Lots of local support for Downtown gambling in the Spa. Maybe it could happen with an Oaklawn buy-in and an effective legislative delegation backing it. Church opposition will not be nearly as effective now as when it narrowly lost a decade ago.

The new voter approved Eastern bypass will take the heavy local traffic off Central so the area should soon be prime for tourist development. Changes in the gambling industry will help this effort and there's growing talk of a fall racing season.

Our new city manager comes from a Portland suburb and seems open to big ideas. Without outsider casinos snapping at us maybe there's a chance.

Re: “Founder Bill Solleder steps down from Low Key Arts, two new directors hired

Great choice for a growing moribund Visit Hot Springs. He now puts together some of the most successful events in town on a shoestring by appealing to younger crowds with quality acts. Will be fun to see what he can do with a real budget. He will bring some much needed spark to the Spa.
He leaves Low Key in great shape with a great reputation and future.

Re: “City inspection prompts fix-up plan at historic Arlington Hotel

Shortly before his death owner Monte Scott put the full rehab number at $50 million, about the same as a new hotel on the Majestic footprint. He also says he couldn't borrow that much at current downtown business levels without additional collateral. He too said Historic District gambling is the solution. Could the Cellas get behind it for a piece of the action? That empire flourishes and there's talk of a fall race season.
