Re: “Why we need the Dream Act: Jonathan Chavez

I understand you seem to be well versed in immigration laws or have done some research. I also understand this seems to be somewhat of a hot topic for you and you're very passionate. I can respect that. However, I'm sure if you knew Jon you would be able to show some semblance of compassion for someone stuck in the system. Regardless of whether or not you think he could have done something about his status is irrelevant. He did not have the knowledge about the laws and regulations of our naturalization and legalization process as a minor. Could you accept the fact that he is an honest, hard working, respected member of society despite his status? And that maybe he did not know where to look to gain legal permanent status?
I understand your point when you say that not all illegal aliens are like Jon. Yes, there are individuals who have done terrible things and are illegal aliens. Instead of using this forum to bash the writer and those in support of this specific individual, could you realize that there are legal permanent U.S. citizens who have been deeply troubled by his current situation and have been positively impacted by this young man?
There is a time and a place for each debate, including that of immigration, which is what this story is somewhat about. It is also about a good, decent, hardworking young man who is stuck and in need of some help and compassion.
