Re: “Arkansas's child welfare system discriminates against relatives of neglectful or abusive parents

My sister and brother in law are now raising three grandchildren in the state of Texas. My nephew and his wife were drug addicts. As much as they loved their children, they could never beat their addictions. My sister did not want to take their kids away but could not stand to see them not cared for as needed. My brother in law and sister spent every dime they had fighting for the kids. They were treated like trash by the DCFS and the courts. My brother in law is a sheriff and my sister is a nurse at a government army hospital. They both undergo random drug testing and background checks were current. Yet, they were made to go through all that and "counseling" to see if they were "fit" to raise the kids. In court, children services produced statements from my parents and my sister and I, saying my sister was not capable of caring for the kids. NEVER once were any of us contacted and questioned and everything they said was lies-just blatant made up lies. The children were taken out of my sister's clean, stable, loving home and placed in a filthy nasty shelter with one room and dirty cots everywhere, while the court was deciding if my sister's home was fit. My brother in law and sister lived in a long drawn out hell on earth because of the "system". They did finally win custody of the children. My nephew and his wife, the parents of the children, were killed in a car wreck in February 2012. I know my nephew had a belief in God but all it takes is a time or two with drugs and some people never can come back. My sister has continued to work the last 2 years while fighting breast cancer and having a double mastectomy-all while taking care of and loving those 3 sweet children. God will keep her a special place in Heaven and I would hate to be the ones from child services or the court that treated her the way they did. By the way, the psychiatrist they forced her and her husband to see, wrote a letter to cps and the judge praising them for the loving awesome people they are. My sister and her husband are heroes. They would not say they are, they would just say they did what they did out of love for their family. Not only does Arkansas need fixed with their system but Texas does as well. Sad world we live in now when people are bad until proven good.
