I grew up going to the Buffalo with Charlie. He was full of life, funny and always ready for a float on the river - even at midnight if there was a full moon. He taught me many things: a REAL canoe is made of canvas stretched on a wood frame; it's quite acceptable to abandon a half-empty can of warm beer for a full can of cold beer; Gene McCarthy was the better choice in 1968 than Hubert Humphrey.
