Re: “Mike Vogler — conscientious in objection and service to others — dies at 69

As VN war draft resisters Mike Vogler and I both spent a few years in Missouri at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in the late '60's, a maximum custody federal penitentiary. I recall that he was immediately put in the `hole' when he arrived because he refused to wear leather shoes. They stuck me in `ad-seg' fearing that I would `organize' the inmates. (James Cagney where are you!)

Mike was a pacifist, an amazing shortstop and first-baseman, kind, decent and an addictive fan of both the Fayetteville Gazette and Pogo. Had the warden played even one hand of poker with him Mike would have had a limousine home that day.

He preceded his passing with a lifetime of immense good work.

Two errors in my post above: He was a big fan of the `Fayetteville' Gazette; he was an even more amazing short-stop. If he ever played poker with the warden he would have gotten out of the `joint' that very day. A funny and intensely decent man.

Mike and I were 'cellmates' and draft resisters in the MCFP during '68 & '69. When he first arrived he refused to wear leather shoes so they promptly put him in the 'hole' until he relented. We recall that he was a big fan of the Arkansa Gazette and read it by a gifted subscription every day. Somewhat aloof from the rest of us resisters he was still warm, tender and an amazing first baseman. I'm very sad to hear of his passing but not surprised that he lived a full life dedicated to service.
