Re: “Gun nuttery: We ain't done yet

For longer than we have all been alive Arkansas has been a one party state. The legislature has been controlled by the Democratic majority since 1876. We've had Republican governors but in the main, before the rise of the 1960's sophisticated liberalism, they reflected the state's genuine social conservatism . Since then, Republicans elected governor have been predictably centrist and non-threatening to the legislative majority. In those days the Gazette and the incomparable George Fisher could be counted on to skewer republican aspirants to high office. Dumas, Brantley, and another one or two other new guys came along to polish their up-town patter all the while trying to convince the folks outside Pulaski county that if you were going to be a Democrat you had to be a Liberal Democrat. When the Hussman's took over the Arkansas Gazette they apparently didn't appreciate such trendy sophistication and most of the columnists were handed their carefully folded paper hats. The result of course is the open warfare that Dumas and Brantley and the others wage against anything and anyone who utters conservative ideals. They would have you believe that anyone who is mildly concerned about protecting themselves or their family is a serious gun nut. As someone whose parent was attacked while she slept let me assure you that the possibility of evil can arise at any time and in any place. My parent survived only due to the inexperience of the attacker at the time but there are at least two of his later victims who were not so lucky. For the next 40 years my parent never slept in a bed but on the floor between the bed and the wall..and never went to sleep without a pistol close at hand. My mother was a Liberal Democrat as well as a devout and vocal liberal feminist. Were she alive, she would tell you that telling an attacker that you read Max Brantley is not going to save you. No columnist, with their effete smugness, nor the police, with all their professionalism, are going to be at hand when an attacker comes after you.
