Re: “The Arkansas Medicaid verification mess: what went wrong

It wasn't in every case, the problem of not submitting income verification within the 10 day window. Being an accountant, I personally responded to the income verification letters for clients in a timely manner. I've confirmed through local DHS offices and the Batesville processing center, that income verifications were indeed received in time. The participants still received cancellation notifications, well beyond the receipt of the submission of their income verification. The only response from DHS is "I have no idea what happened. Give me your phone number and I'll get back with you." Of course, no return phone call ever came. The wait time in calling the DHS Pine Bluff Scanning Center, where the cancellations were initiated, leads me to believe they have no intentions of answering phone calls. This pathetic handling of the income verification process has left many families in dire situations, particularly with maintenance medications. One DHS employee suggested going to the doctor and asking for sample medications. How can this ridiculous suggestion be accomplished when the individuals do not have coverage to pay for the office visit?? In my opinion, the way this entire process has been handled is only an attempt to kick thousands of eligible recipients out of the subsidized programs. The burden then falls on the shoulders of the cancelled recipients to try and get the whole mess straightened out, since the DHS employees say they know nothing! THANK YOU, ASA!!!!!!
