Re: “UPDATE: Microsoft lends support to governor; former governor's aide in the thick of it

Arkansas is well on its way to having all public and charter school districts connected to the State of Arkansas network and the Internet via fiber optic cable. I think there are about 98 districts left to convert to the new K12 network. One can track the network upgrade project here: https://gis.arkansas.gov/dis/viewer/apscn/…

Re: “Ever butt-dialed 911? False alarm from panic button in West Fork

It wasn't the second false alarm in Arkansas schools this month. It might have been the second one reported in the media. Most schools are going through "growing pains" with the Rave Panic Button system. All staff need lots of practice on using it, on not accidentally using it, and most importantly, what to do in the event of an actual emergency. Until staff practice different emergency scenarios so the response becomes automatic, we've still got a long way to go. I'm also hearing that many rural schools are having problems with accurate location information because the cellular network is too weak to pinpoint the caller's location.

Re: “Voter suppression reports; Prosecutor Jegley weighs in

The "if we can scan your drivers license, it will be quicker" ruse was also used at my polling place, but I don't buy it. The poll workers at my precinct were using the paper voter roll book when I arrived at lunch time. I was found in the book, without being asked for my ID because the poll worker personally knew me, signed in, and had by ballot ticket in less than a minute.

However, about 30 minutes later while I was still standing in line, a lady shows up and insists that they start using the iPads to scan drivers licenses. I asked the poll worker who signed me in who the lady was and she said she didn't know. It looked very fishy to me. I so much wanted to stand outside and remind people they did not have to show any form of ID to vote.

Re: “82 Arkansas legislators covered by state employee insurance

This is yet another reason to keep pressure on DF&A EBD to maintain parity between the state employee and public school plans. My thinking is that the legislators who are enjoying this perk of their "job" will think twice about reducing the benefits provided by both plans and instead allocate more funding to the public school plan.

Re: “Diane Blair's papers produce trove of insight on Hillary Clinton

I, too, consider the quotes as compliments to Hillary. They will serve her well as our next president. Also, I always thought she would have been a great secretary of Defense because of her "ruthlessness."

Re: “Boys State report: Conservative, but not uniformly

My memory of the 1988 Boy's State is one of determination to simply survive the week. I made it, many thanks go the good fortune to get a group counselor who tried as best he could to shield us from much of the overbearing conservatism present then, and now, at this event.

In the days way before the Internet made it to Arkansas' universities, I spent what little "free time" I had scouring the shelves of Torreyson Library to read everything I could on the subject of "homosexuality." And, then I had the actual experience of meeting other "gay" kids like me later that summer at the Arkansas Governor's School.

If given the choice to go back and change any of the events of the summer, I wouldn't. Having to figure out a way to live with a majority of people who thought and acted differently than I did served me well. Plus, it is one of many memories of getting to talk to our future President, Bill Clinton.
