Re: “Jim Hendren ends arrangement for drug court labor

Not far from the 1800s tradition of Arkansas prisoners hired out to any employer who wanted free labor. PLUS the employers received a stipend per prisoner to provide food, clothing, and shelter, but there were no methods in place to determine whether any of that money actually benefited the prisoners. Once slavery ended, the boom years of using prison labor began. Thanks to prisoners, Arkansas gained roads, bridges, railroads, and coal miners, to name a few. Just one example of the conditions prisoners suffered appeared in this newspaper excerpt from 1893: "...about 100 convicts were leased out on a contract to build a railroad bed in and near Helena, Ark.; that while there engaged in this work, camped in the city limits of Helena on low swampy ground and drinking water from a swag or pond at the camp, said water being contaminated by drainage from Helena and beds of saw dust, etc.; that on or about December 17, a number were taken violently sick and there were six deaths among them there; one en route to Little Rock on December 21, and six since there arrived"

Re: “Arkansas Poll: Yep, Trump will carry Arkansas

More evidence of the obvious. Arkansas ranks near the bottom in per capita income and education and near the top in teen pregnancy, prison population, and people on welfare. High value on willful ignorance. Low value on human rights. No surprises.

Re: “Merry Christmas from the First Family: Still smelling rats

Of course when God Himself ordains that a certain politician, indeed an entire political party, take the reins in a state, how dare anyone question what they do?

Re: “Psychologists urge ABC to correct bogus depiction of RAD in '20/20' coverage of Justin Harris

Thank you again for great work! Here's hoping this leads to some changes at DHS.

Re: “A conversation with '20/20's' Elizabeth Vargas on the Justin Harris 'rehoming' episode

To answer Vgordyr's question, thousands of signatures called for Harris to be kicked out of the legislature, to no avail. State law specifies that the only way to ditch an elected representative is for the state legislature to kick him out. Despite hundreds of phone calls to the legislature and individual legislator offices, this august body of righteous rightwingers didn't see fit to give Harris the boot. Likewise, as far as we know, our rightwing governor also didn't step in to lecture the boys about right action. Harris will serve until the new legislature convenes January 2017.

Re: “Battling Boozman: worth the fight?

It's essential that viable Democratic candidates speak on progressive issues and values. The deafening silence allowed by Mark Pryor and even Mike Beebe is part of the reason Democrats have lost power in this state. There's this uncomfortable belief that the rightwingers hold the moral high ground while nothing could be further from the truth. Democratic leaders MUST frame the dialogue by which we show the power and truth of our politics. So what if we don't win the first round? If we believe in ourselves and espouse positions that honor the progressive tradition, we will ultimately prevail.

Re: “The war against Planned Parenthood open line

Seems the Gov nor the GOP leadership can read. PP does not sell fetal parts. Never did. It's against federal law. Any money received is for storage and transport. The implication about 'selling' that's touted by right wing nuts is that PP is making a profit. A profit, by definition, is income above the cost. All they're doing with these funds is meeting their costs. Of course even if God wrote these facts on the wall in front of them, they would ignore it. As others have stated, this is an opportunity to grandstand and high-five themselves. Basically jacking off because they've added another layer of shame and hardship on women.
