Re: “UAMS layoffs begin: Update

As a 25 year UAMS employee, the hospital is generating a profit. We have been running at full capacity for 3 years and it is a daily occurrence of holding patients in the ER until a bed opens up. We have reopened the old hospital to place patients. We are in dire need of expansion for new beds which is revenue producing but have no funds to expand. The profits have to support the additional missions at UAMS for academic and research which are not enough.
As a patient care person, UAMS has always been underfunded by the state and yet we see no cuts in adminstration or even a reduction in their higher salaries.

Re: “UAMS will reduce workforce by 600 positions, including 258 layoffs: UPDATE

As an employee of UAMS for 25 years I can tell you that the hospital is profitable. We have been at near full capacity for nearly 2 years and have opened up the old hospital to place patients. The ER is constantly full with patients we are holding until a bed opens up in the hospital and care managers are under daily pressure to move patients out for discharge to open up those beds. There are plans to add an new wing to be built over the ER but present situation prevents that.
What profit is generated goes to cover the expenses of the Academic training and Research and it is not enough which results in a deficit.
The state of Arkansas gives less financial support to our major teaching institution than any other state in the union. Even Mississsippi gives 50 million more than Arkansas.
We need the financial support to expand the hospital and to renovate our Outpatient Center as these are the main money generators and an increase in state supported funds.
