Re: “Musing over Miss Arkansas

Ms. Franco,

I had a feeling you might go there eventually. There really were great points and good writing involved in that article. With that being said, while competing in the Miss America Organization my platform involved helping veterans once they're home, whether it be PTSD, substance abuse, or simply readjusting to life. MAO gave me the backing to do a lot of things, and opened many doors that would not have been there otherwise to speak and spread the word of these problems.

Now, the reason people are on here defending women like myself is because we felt...abused. I know I felt like someone that didn't even know me had dwindled me down to some bimbo that dresses up and frivelously spends money and that is not the case. Not even close. I've read your post that you think these "digs" weren't bad and you made them seem harmless. They're not. Point is you made me feel bullied. I don't know if you had a bad experience with somebody that does or did pageants or you've just made your mind up from lack of research and going with the sterotype. What you will learn, Ms. Franco, if you take the time to really research what the MAO system is really about you will find smart, beautiful from the inside out, confident, wonderful women that are simply trying to make a difference in the world.

You're getting this reaction from individuals because you personally attacked them. The words you thought harmless, weren't and trying to drive away comments by your last posts in my opinion is a little petty. It's okay to own up to the fact that you might not have done enough research or went in with preconceived notions which are fine but just come out and say sorry. We didn't deserve to be called out and lied about.

PS When we don't make the ten, we really don't run backstage and bawl. We have friends in the ten so we hurry back stage to put on our sweats, jump in front of the tv they've set up with the live feed, and snack on the goodies they've set up for us. It's a fun environment where we get to relax and be with our friends and give shout outs to the girls still in competition running down the hall for quick changes so they can get back to the stage. You would know that if you would have simply asked. We aren't "orange twigs", we're people.
