Re: “UPDATE: Education committee passes bill to tamper with American history curriculum

This legislation is a reaction to the ADE's decision to shift social studies curriculum starting in the fall of 2015. Starting this fall students in the 5th grade will be taught American History pre-colonization - 1820's. Students in the 8th grade will be taught 1800-1900. American History classes in high school (11th grade for most HS) will spend the year covering 1890's to present. The ADE is requiring all schools to spend the first 4 weeks of the year covering previous knowledge. The ADE recognizes that the drastic shift will leave some students will no exposure to early American History. The legislation wants to make the temporary 4 weeks lessons permanent. The intent of the new frameworks is to allow classes to go deeper into studying history with the use or primary source documents and student based research projects. Classes can now spend more time going deeper. American History curriculum has been criticized for being a mile wide but an inch deep. These new frameworks could help to change that image. However, it is conceivable that the only exposure to early American History for our students would be as a ten-year old. PS*** contrary to some of the earlier posts - John Locke WAS NOT A DEIST, we use Arkansas frameworks everyday, and the eye and hair color of the senator have nothing to do with this legislation. I only thought conservatives were narrow minded!
