Your excellent article about Cheers brought back memories of the time when the building housed a barber shop. I had gone there one day, clutching a fifty-cent piece (this was some time ago), for the purpose of having my locks shorn. Indeed the shearing was well underway when the barber, distracted by a conversation he was having with another patron, ran the electric clipper into my ear. Well, ears turn out to be highly vascular organs, and in those days the sight of blood--especially my own--induced high trauma. I rose woosily from the chair, stumbled out the door, and pitched my cookies in the flowerbed outside. It was scant occasion for my cheering and for the embarrassed barber even less so.
