Re: “Corporate welfare watch. Arkadelphia lands Chinese pulp mill, 250 jobs

Well let's talk about local incentives. The people of Clark County passed an economic development tax to invest in themselves. The money has been used to support small and large businesses that create jobs. Ten million will be used for infrastructure investments to support this new industry. The property tax abatement is also a good incentive. Without the abatement the county would get 100% of nothing. With the abatement the county will get 35% of a big sum. Just for the local school district it will mean about $12-million per year it would otherwise not receive.

We also have so much excess timber that landowners have no market for pulp, so it is difficult to get timber thinned as needed. So in addition to the 250 direct jobs there will be approximately 750 to 1000 new jobs on the timber supply side.

Moreover, the new technology for this pulp mill is odorless and it will generate about 70MWD of electricity to put on the grid, all from a renewable resource, not fossil fuels.

Sounds like a heck of a deal to me.
