Re: “Criticism arises on Hutchinson appointee to dental board UPDATE

"When it comes to appointments, I've learned you cannot satisfy every interest group." A laughable statement. The Governor fails to tell us about the interest group he is certainly satisfying, the Association of Dental Service Organizations (ADSO). In simple terms, the ADSO represents corporate dentistry. This group sought to amend our state's Dental Practice Act (HB 1250). Ultimately all their proposed changes sought to benefit dental service organizations and the practice of corporate dentistry. One of the proposed changes sought to change the composition of the dental board. "The Governor shall appoint to the board, upon the advise and consultation of the Dentists for Oral Health Innovation or its successor, a dentist member." The Dentists for Oral Health Innovation is a nonprofit spawned from members of the corporate dentistry movement. This portion of the proposed amendments was UNsuccessful; however, it appears Governor Hutchinson obliged their request by appointing Dr. Smith. Dr. Smith is one of the most prominent "corporate dentists" in Arkansas. The ADSO appears to have lobbied well enough to secure their appointment. I am left disappointed by our Governor and concerned about the quality of his appointee.
