In response to Little Rocker, the work of Studio Main and AHTD should be appreciated for advancing the dialogue about I-30 and the search for the best outcome. The "convertible" plan advanced by a local volunteer team does show the decked park and local "connector" lanes but was much different that the massive elevated freeway currently proposed through downtown.
The "convertible" plan proposed was intended as a compromise since AHTD stated that a true boulevard plan would not handle the traffic and that a Chester Street bridge would would do little to reduce congestion. It turns out that AHTD's traffic projections were flawed and that a true boulevard may well be the best option for managing congestion and that a Chester Street bridge would, in fact, handle much more traffic, especially during of the rush, than AHTD had stated. It was also hoped that AHTD would include the cost of the 6th-9th decking as part of their project which they have since stated they would not.
Because of the above factors, the "convertible", compromise plan is not a best outcome and work is being done on a better plan based on more accurate data being produced by Smart Mobility. In the end, do we not want the best design possible for Little Rock for both downtown and commuters?
