Or was the black man a witness that was living in the woods and came upon the scene. He figured he would be blamed and wouldn't get a fair trail in Arkansas. There seems to be no shortage of suspects in this crime.

Only knowing about the details here, the mention of the castration is a particularly troubling detail. Why only one boy? Why this boy ? You go back to watching too many TV shows - did the killer know the boys ? Was it the two step fathers trying to teach the boys a lesson then something went wrong. How does one person tie up three boys? Where was the actual scene of he crime? Why was so many pieces of evidence not processed. The interview process was a dismal failure. It seems "suggestions" were made. Kind of like asking "did the perp have brown hair". I am sure the movie is dramatized for effect ,
