Re: “The ruin of Reaganomics

I lived in Washington, D.C. during the Reagan years, and I remember how everyone went gaga over Reagan -- every time he tilted his head, sighed "Well," and then rasped out another cute Reaganism. And, I remember how I was NOT gaga over him. In fact, I secretly wondered if maybe someone had slipped some drugs into the water, and I didn't get any. I also remember the night of the inauguration ball at the Hilton, above Dupont Circle, as I watched the rich folk stream up Connecticut Avenue in their furs and tuxedos. I was kind of reminded of the pod people from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," and I eerily imagined that they might just turn, point at me, and hiss "Not one of us! Not one of us!" I was a firsthand witness to the invasion of the one percent, and I fear that they have come to stay.

Re: “Burger joint of the week: Reno's Argenta Cafe

Perhaps one reason you were "one of only two customers in the place" is that the place stinks from cigarette smoke. Reno's has a wonderful menu, but I (and many of my friends and colleagues) cannot eat there due to the stale stench of smoke, which not only gets in your eyes, but also in your hair and clothes and pores. If Reno's would "boldly go" to a non-smoking establishment, I believe they would enjoy a significant increase in business from diners who currently are forced eat in non-smoking restaurants in Argenta, such as The Starving Artist, Cregeen's, and Ristorante Capeo.

KAT: Next week's joint is a non-smoking joint.
