Re: “Casting out demons: why Justin Harris got rid of kids he applied pressure to adopt

I am not a fan of DHS i think the whole system needs an overhaul.
We considered adoption through DHS 17 years ago and quickly changed our minds by the mere treatments of social workers towards us in the first 15 minutes of meeting us.
They new NOTHING about us YET they treated us with such rudeness, contempt and as if we were criminals when we went to their offices to inquire about adopting through DHS.
Keep in mind this was simply an "informational meeting" to find out about THEIR process we had not made any kind of commitment at this point. But instead that meeting was turned into an interrogation process. When they started asking detailed questions about our biological child and wouldn't tell us why they needed that information all bets were off and we walked away. We got the sense that they were "fishing" to bring another child into the system. Then i found out later on through a former caseworker that the more children in the system the more job security for them.
Before we walked away i swiped the notes they were taking on us (they stepped out of the office temporarily and left the "notes" unattended) i took the notes on my way out of the building, tore them up and flushed them down the toilet. It was truly a frightening meeting and I wanted DHS to have ZERO information on our family.
In the end we did end up adopting but not through DHS. We adopted internationally through an orphanage. It was a legally difficult and a long road(laws of two different countries had to be followed) but at least they were supportive, helpful, honest and did not treat us like criminals.
Both my children are now happy, healthy, well adjusted adults. I wouldn't change a thing.
