Just back from a long vacation, I don't feel my usual dislocation. Internet connections were sketchy, but I read the Arkansas Times and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and stayed up with e-mail.

Re: “Thursday's open line

Norma, I think females are speaking pretty loudly about Donald Trumps moral compass. Two female Senators and McCain basically scuttled the health care bill. Now you have three of the biggest female CEO's say after Tuesday they have no desire to continue working on a committee with him. Steve Schwartzman who was the chairman of the committee chose to go to Jared Kushner to broker a statement between the committee and the White House to mutually dissolve the committee and that's when Trump did his classic you're fired. Timelines are hell when politics are concerned.

Re: “Wednesday's open line and a video double header

pj - my wife and I were having a conversation about history and I made the comment that I should probably grab my Western Civilization book and what I discovered is that course hasn't been taught on college campuses in 20 or 30 years. I'm with you on your comment.

Re: “Tuesday's open line, plus the news roundup

I tried an hour ago to wish DBI a Happy Birthday and tiny pass has given me fits. And to think, I just renewed last week for another year!

Re: “UPDATE: Andre Jackson arrested for fatal shooting of Italian tourist

pj - for a reference turn left off of Cantrell and head south on Rodney Parham which becomes Green Mountain as it is a cut through to Markham. All of those apartments were the place to be for singles and young married in the 70's and early 80's but now I would guess it is majority HUD housing.

Re: “Police identify suspect, officer in carjacker shooting

I personally know Officer Breshears as he worked off duty for Worthen Bank & Trust in the early '90's as did many other officers that I got to know. He's one of the most professional officers you will ever run into. He also knows about as much on gangs in Little Rock as you will find. I saw him about six months ago in our parking lot after a traffic stop doing paperwork and he's the same courteous officer he's always been.

Re: “Riverfest calls it quits

The beauty of Riverfest is they do a post mortem each year that is brutally honest or at least they did in my day. I was a committee chairman and also a board member in the '80's and the one thing we were true to was what worked and what didn't. You may be at that point now where it is no longer viable and if that is the case let's say thanks folks, you had a hell of a forty year run. Most importantly thank you volunteers who put on this festival. You have to give Julius Breckling and Jim Sick a big pat on the back for allowing the committee to have the vision to allow and help what would become Riverfest. When I started, the Excelsior was new and had two parking lots and an old jail sitting on one parking lot. That's it! Riverfest promoted the march east. And as the march went east you not only cleaned up a sleezy part of the riverfront that was littered with beer cans and needles but an amphitheater was added. The march east has always been part of Riverfest and now you are all the way down to the Clinton Library. I will never forget that someone in the 80's told me and it was probably Jimmy Moses that great American cities are known for their riverfronts and I think all who participated in Riverfest did that for our city. Let's not be sad as we have a great place to show off to our visitors.
