Re: “The line is open; so are Arkansas River bridges after barge accident

Hypochondriacs rejoice!
http://esagil.org/ is a free website where you can select multiple symptoms and hit the Diagnose button. It's kinda weak on the psych side, so diagnosing our resident trolls will be difficult. It is slightly easier than the symptom checkers on webmd.com and mayoclinic.com .

Re: “Saturday night open line

" Should they pay several hundred dollars for a device to use? Should they spend $30-50 month for a broadband connection to do it?" You have strong opinions about what poor people are "entitled" to spend their money on. We should not have luxuries like a computer and the internet.
The computer is a household appliance. The children use it for their homework. Schools, employers, and government agencies assume you have internet access, like they assume you have a refrigerator and a phone. Live a week without touching your computer and tell me it is an unnecessary luxury.
You then say "If a person/family is truly hungry due to lack of income should they be blogging on a website about "Arkansas politics and culture?"" If a poor family has a tv, should it be rigged only to receive educational tv stations? Should poor people just not offer any opinions?
So I'm lumped into being a wingnut for pointing out your narrow mind.

Re: “Saturday night open line

I don't jump in much, but I have to say I've heard less empathy here for low income people than you'd expect from a Koch brother. "Less than the cost of a meal" is an easy phrase for any well-fed person to toss off. It's more like the cost for several meals. You hear it during all of those fund-raising drives or when you're asked to kick in for school supplies. This is from the same people who raised hell about Republicans cutting food stamps. Then you say anybody can afford the cost of a meal. That's sounds more like our congressional delegation than a bunch of liberals.

Re: “Friday night flights

I really don't like the social media abbreviations for life and thought. Tiny tweets substitute for reasoned discourse. They are bumper sticker retorts rather than an attempt to understand or communicate with respect. When you think about the trend, social media is actually anti-social.

The new Arkansas Times like-dislike labels are such cop-outs. They promote cowardly egg-throwing instead of direct confrontation of differences.

Of course, anonymous (pseudonym) posting is at the root of this problem. We should be able to have the courage to express our thoughts using our real names. However, society's snipers have closed that option.

Re: “Fire away

After Sound Policy identified the GOP's corpse as a clueless mob of anarchists, I started going through my collection of post-apocalyptic and dystopian movies.

They run the gamut from the grim "The Day After" and "On the Beach" (1959) to the goofy Woody Allen's "Sleeper." And there's the action epics, like "Terminator," "Postman," and "Waterworld" and "Road Warrior" series. The endless collections of zombie movies (and Soylent Green permutations) strangely do well at the food concession counters in the theaters. I particularly liked the recent TV series "Jericho" and "The Walking Dead."

It seems like everybody assumes that they are going to be the ones who are going to turn out okay if the imaginary idyllic world of the play-acting anarchists and armchair libertarians succeed by accident. They may be distressed when they get what they bumble into.

"Republicans blast Beebe's push for Broadway"

I'm not a Republican, but I don't think Mike has that good a singing voice, either.

Re: “Rove's candidate in the First

For those tired of rovian repugs and Dinos, the Green Party candidate in the 1st is Ken Adler -- http://www.kenadlerforcongress.org - 870-793-7655.

Before you start with "spoiler" and "wasting a vote" screeds, what do you think you've been doing with your vote for all of these years? You voted for what you thought were the lesser of two evils and still got screwed just as bad. It isn't until people vote FOR a candidate whose platform they want, they'll get real representation.
