Re: “Halter slams lottery scholarship bill

I agree with Halter that it is a big mistake to reduce the scholarship amounts so drastically. I have a son who is a senior at the U of A. He has benefited greatly from the $5000/yr. My second son enters college next year and is now facing a much greater financial burden if he chooses to attend U of A.

From the beginning, I've not understood why there is no need-basis for this scholarship. Do families earning over $120,000 (or whatever amount would make the numbers work out) really need the scholarship money the same as middle class families? Of course not. DO PEOPLE REALIZE THAT ARKANSAS IS ONE OF ONLY THREE STATES WHOSE STATE SCHOLARSHIPS DO NOT INCLUDE A NEED-BASIS FOR RECIPIENTS?

Eliminating the upper third or fourth of income earners is the most reasonable way to reduce the number of recipients and maintain the integrity of the program. If the intent is to increase opportunity, then we should be true to the intent. Give struggling families teh assistance the need to get a good education.
