Re: “Musing over Miss Arkansas

As a former pageant contestant, I am disappointed there are still so many people who actually don't understand pageants. It may not be your thing, but to so completely misunderstand what the ladies gain from the pageant, is a shame. My pageant competitions not only paid for my first two years of college (without winning any big titles) but taught me the confidence to handle anything, the benefit of hard work (preparing for fitness, or talent), and the ability to ace any interview. Throughout my career in health care, I have gotten every job, promotion, and opportunity I have interviewed for, even against older candidates. The skills of pageantry transcend the stage and prepare women for the competition of life. No one criticizes sporting events that rely on brawn but not brains. NFL, NBA, boxing are all celebrations of physical achievement, and people are free to admire them. But an intelligent, fit, and talent woman is mocked because of her participation in a pageant. The priorities are certainly not where they should be.
