Re: “Hendrix ready to play some football

Coming out of high school in semi-rural Arkansas, I was looking for a different college experience than that sought by my high school classmates. I wanted to be around kids who were smart and could have a good time without football and frat parties. I was lucky to find that experience in my home state, as many of my Hendrix classmates from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi could not. Hendrix used to be something unique among Southern colleges, more akin to a northeastern liberal arts experience, and different in many ways from even fellow ACS schools. Cloyd seems to think that football will recruit more students, but I can assure you of two things:
1. Hendrix football will be largely ignored until the character of the student body changes significantly.
2. When the character of the student body changes, a very unique place in the South will have been lost, and many of the brightest students from Arkansas and surrounding states will no longer consider attending.

I will always remember Hendrix in the 1990's very fondly, but I would not attend if I were coming out of high school today. I realize that some will read this and consider it evidence of Hendrix's snootiness. That is certainly not my intent. I have always been, and always will be, a Razorback fan (even though I live in Texas now). But there is no doubt that Hendrix was a unique place which all Arkansans could be proud of. I fear that is rapidly being lost.
