Re: “Maria Markham recommended for top position at Department of Higher Education

Excuse me 2blessed, you seem to be trying to lump my comment in with the others. I said nothing about her gender or looks. Arkansas higher education is full of women who are both brilliant and beautiful. But as for Maria, her qualifications are weak at best. In all of her years of higher ed experience, she has spent most of it at ONE tiny community college (for those interested, Cossatot has an enrollment of 1500 students). I'm interested to see how the powers that be expect her to interact with and a university with an enrollment of 20,000 students. What experience could she possibly offer? There is no way that she could have any understanding of the highly complicated administrative and financial processes of a large university. According to her resume, she has 2 years of experience at Henderson as a faculty member. Two. So yes, I have seen her resume - I'm not impressed. And it's surprising to me that for someone so amazing, she hasn't managed to find a job outside of the thriving metropolis of DeQueen. So I'm supposed to believe she's fit to lead Arkansas Higher Ed? Please. And as for her "reputation," I've definitely heard of her - but not for academic achievements. But the most damning fact of all is the proprietary school Ph.D. Accredited or not, a school that is in the business of making profits is not in the business of creating an educated population. The do not have students, they have customers. And institutions like this are not good for higher ed. They prey on the weak, and they are the largest contributor to this country's rising student loan default rate. Anyone who thinks supporting one of these institutions is acceptable is not qualified to be the ambassador for higher education in our state. Period.

Re: “Maria Markham recommended for top position at Department of Higher Education

She earned a Ph.D. from a proprietary school? Disgraceful. And this is the person who is supposed to be the champion of public higher education? This is a complete slap in the face to our institutions of higher learning by the Asa administration, but I suppose that is to be expected at this point. Even the ill-advised interim pick was better than this one.
