Re: “Rivers runs through it

Mr. Reed in his review of the Joan Rivers documentary reminds me of what I have against her. She would be a better comedian if her mama had washed out her mouth with soap a time or two. Ms. Rivers and her cohort don't seem to understand that the truly funny performers compliment their audiences with subtlety, not repeated and repeated and repeated allusions to body parts and bodily functions. That kind of humor risks losing its appeal after a mental age of six. I am a big fan of well-told dirty jokes, but an hour's worth at a time is a burden. I was on a double date once with a friend who told one smutty joke after another until my date said, in her perkiest voice, "Y'all know how to play Amsterdam?" "No, how?" my friend asked. She said, "Amsterdam tired of these jokes I could cry."
