Re: “Little Rock Central leads National Merit semi-finalists

Central has 480 students. To have 14 National Merit seniors is great and all, but I don't think Central deserves any awards for it. 14 out of 480, whereas the Arkansas School for Math Science and the Arts (ASMSA in Hot Springs) has 7 out of a mere 115 or so students - over double the rate of Central.

Re: “Go to UA-Fayetteville without even going

I have a similar dream - it's the end of the semester, and I realize that I've been skipping a class for the last couple of weeks, and I've got to walk into that class and try and catch up.

If a civilian like me has those dreams, I'd hate to imagine what real war PTSD is like.

The tests and the homework were the least-influential part of college for me. The lectures were where I learned everything useful, and where I learned to love things that had nothing to do with my degree. Things like history, literature, and more history. Those things mean more to me than the accounting degree. Take the classroom dialog away, and my degree would be much less valuable and interesting to me. I don't think online college is a trend in the right direction. I don't want anything to do with it.

Re: “Texas charter school operator pulls biology workbook after complaint of unconstitutional instruction

Both the AR and the TX letters state "Our Biology course does examine all sides of the scientific evidence relating to the theory of evolution."

Creationism is not a "side of the scientific evidence." What about creationism is scientific? It makes no predictions, it evaluates no evidence. The CEO of Responsive Education Solutions doesn't know what is science and what isn't science. He's in way over his head, and tax dollars are paying his salary. Though they're removing that particular Biology book, his letter still thumbs its nose at secular education when he says "Also, as an aside, by confining the critique to a single lesson, we believe that it will be easier for us to adapt our curriculum to other states whose academic standards do not permit a critical analysis of prevailing scientific theories."

So, in taxpayer-funded CEO Chuck Cook's mind, AR (probably all of the other 49 states) doesn't permit critical analysis like TX.

Thank you very much Max Brantley for staying on this issue.

Re: “The Darr saga: Will he quit? And, if he doesn't, what then?

Call me crazy, but the topic is "The Darr saga: Will he quit? And, if he doesn't, what then?" Insisting upon changing the topic to UAMS - that's a diversion. What does arwth gain by diverting the topic away from Darr's upcoming resignation?

Re: “Metering in the market: Breakfast killer?

I, too, like the new meters. The street used to be full up all day wih workers, making it really hard to find a spot near flying saucer for lunch. It's much better now.

Re: “Open carry crowd tries to intimidate moms in Texas

Seems like a call to 911 would be in order to me. A lot of calls to 911. Just call the police, report man with gun.

Re: “Mount St. Mary principal responds on firing of gay teacher for marrying

Fortunately for MSM, sexual orientation is yet to be included in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, or in codified in Arkansas (as it is in many other states already). It's just a matter of time though, and MSM and Arkansas are on the ass end of catching on.

If the Internet had been around prior to 1964, we'd have a fun trail of comments by bigots to peruse, making comments such as "blacks should know better than to apply for a job at xxx" or "women should know better than to think they deserve equal pay for equal work."

For those looking back at this 20 years from now, you fire-the-gays defenders are going to be about as cool as the bigots in the Woolworth's Soda Fountain Sit-In photo look now.
