Hot for the Ice House

Is yet another bank in the offing for Kavanaugh Boulevard in Hillcrest?

Ted Boswell, owner of the Ice House Revival building, where Ferneau restaurant, a gym, offices and other businesses are located, said last week that some “pretty big operators” had approached him about buying the building and its parking lot across the street.

Rumors have been circulating that Bank of America wants to put a branch on the site now being used as a parking lot. Boswell said he is not in negotiation on such a sale, and that the building wasn’t up for sale. But he did confirm that there is interest, and said he “would not be surprised” if the potential buyers had ties to a bank.

The Ice House Revival structure, Boswell noted, was an expensive project. It replaced a Hillcrest landmark that burned in the 1990s, and features a clock tower. Residents of the neighborhood were pleased with the building’s appearance and solid construction.

If a bank were to locate on the lot, customers of the building’s businesses would be required to find street parking.

A new bank would be within just a few blocks of a Delta Trust at 2924 Kavanaugh and a Metropolitan Bank branch slated to open by the end of the year at Kavanaugh and Beechwood.
