Re: “Why UA student senate rejected resolution against Rebel flag. Sad!

Slavery didn't exactly end 150 years ago. The Emancipation Proclamation may have ushered in a protracted phasing out of it, but it effectively continued for decades after it "ended" because of attitudes, resistance, and enforcement "looking the other way." It takes generations for an institution like that to be purged, and the insanity we see in the news every single day...Charlotte, Tulsa, Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, Ferguson, ad nauseam, is proof that it is still gnaws at our social fiber. There may indeed be a revolution in our future, and we shouldn't wonder what the problem is.

Re: “Why UA student senate rejected resolution against Rebel flag. Sad!

Carolyn Sue can't help how she feels and how she sees the "Confederate flag." She was likely raised by folks who perpetuated the "Southern Heritage" bit, and now apparently continues the perpetuation of it herself. The now popular version of this flag was relatively obscure (certainly outside of a military context) until it was taken up by Dixiecrats like Strom Thurmond who were steadfastly against integration, and it remained popular in those circles throughout the 1960s in opposition to the civil rights movement. Other ancillary symbols of those eras include burning crosses, and white robes and hoods. Carolyn Sue probably has a difficult time understanding how anyone can see her flag in any other light. The flag has been and continues to be a symbol of terror to people besides the (hopefully dying out) hangers on of "Southern Heritage." Fergit Hell.

A good number of those kids on the student senate at the U of A were probably raised up by folks a lot like Carolyn Sue. They were brought up to understand that they are superior to other people, because of their "honest, hard-working, God-fearing" ancestors. They haven't yet gotten a true understanding of equity and equality, and are oblivious to the notion of "lucky sperm." It's possible to get through life without ever truly gaining that understanding, as we can see in contemporary social media commentary and failed student senate resolutions like this one.

Re: “Little Rock tallies cost of take-home police cars

I wonder why there are several listings for a department called "Ofc. Jason Harris."

Crap! Are those total maintenance costs over the life of the vehicle? The largest number I see in that column is $68,457.19.
