In his own words

We decided we couldn’t do better than an original submission from the winner of the Times’ Best Newspaper Writer category. Philip Martin of the Democrat-Gazette graciously accepted our invitation for 100 words or so.

MARTIN: Making connections.
  • MARTIN: Making connections.

For me, writing is largely a selfish act. I just try to do the best I can to work hard, be honest and to never condescend to whatever readership may lurk beyond my screen. Martin Amis once said writing is a war against cliche, and that makes sense to me. Writing is also like music — it's all about rhythm and phrasing. Sometimes it's about the spaces between the beats. But most of all, it's about connecting mind to mind, without pretending to be something finer, smarter, stronger or braver than you are. Thank you for this. I can't pretend I'm not as honored as I am surprised.
