Re: “Beebe announces more lottery money

I just looked at their website today, It is totally different. The rules are clearly stated and in a different format.
No sour grapes, just disappointed. I'll have a freshman next year again, but he is receiving an ACT scholarship already. :-)

Re: “Beebe announces more lottery money

I called again on behalf of my son again this morning when I heard about the miracle $6mm. She said because he fell to 11 hours in his three years of college at Arkansas Tech, he does not qualify for any and is not on any waiting list and he can reapply for the spring. WHat changes that would qualify him then. Even with the summer courses he is supposed to graduate next May. They are giving any Baptist nursing, dental, etc. students the money, they are giving students that alreayd have scholarships money, but not the kid who has strugged through college and had to drop a class one semester. I wasn't going to get upset about this again. :-)

Re: “Lottery money: Haves and have nots UPDATE

just an update... son dropped below the required 12 hours in college one semester, even though he took summer class to make it up, plus some, he got put in the non traditional pile. So, no money for him this year. What a crock of BS.

Re: “Lottery money: Haves and have nots UPDATE

Yes, somehow he was considered non traditional. Not in my bank account though. :) And not according to his last three years as a full time student on campus.
I'm sure they have rules and regs. I'm not sure if he went under 12 hours over the past 3 years .... the ADHE website said, if you have 12 hours of college credit you may quailify. That was before today. That led me to believe the last semester had to be 12 hours. Oh well. I'm moving on. What's funny is the ones that I know that received it are the ones that are calling for less government intervention.

Re: “Lottery money: Haves and have nots UPDATE

Phone lines have been busy all day. My email has not been answered.
Here is copy of my email I received: He's made the Dean's list the last few semesters, did have the ACT score needed. I'm sure I'm missing something? He is an Emergency Management Major. He has taken summer school classes to stay on track since he was working. Maybe this makes him non-tradtional?

Thank you for applying for the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship Program. The Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) apologizes for the delay in notifying you of your award status for the Academic Challenge Scholarship Program.

We have reviewed your Academic Challenge Scholarship application and determined that your academic achievements qualify you to be considered for the Academic Challenge Scholarship under the “Nontraditional Student Category”. The Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) received a large number of applicants that met the eligibility criteria for this Category.Due to the large number of applicants and limited resources, ADHE has prioritized the scholarship awards based up the criteria established in legislation and with related policy reviewed by the Arkansas Lottery Commission Legislative Oversight Committee.

We regret to inform you that ADHE is unable to award you the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship at this time. If additional funding becomes available at a later date, we will send you an email notification to update you on your scholarship status for the 2010-11 academic year.

The rules and regulations that govern the Academic Challenge Scholarship – Nontraditional Category state that when there are more qualified applicants than available awards, ADHE is required to evaluate each application and assign points based on the highest level of progress towards degree, highest postsecondary cumulative grade point average, and enrollment in a program of study that is in an area of critical workforce need or is in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field. When prioritizing the following process was used: 70% of the determination was closeness to degree completion, 20% was based on GPA, and 10% was based on if a student was in a high demand program. Again, we thank you for applying for the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship. You can access the rules and regulations for the scholarship program by visiting the “Financial Aid” Division page at www.adhe.edu.

We commend you on your academic achievements, and we regret not being able to make an award at this time. Please reapply after January 1, 2011, for consideration for the 2011-12 academic year.

I'm sure there may be "more deserving" students out there, but when I hear form someone that is already awarded a scholarship for full tuition then gets the lottery scholarship on top of that, it seems to be double dipping. Govt. is known for that though, right?
