Re: “Save the turkeys! Animal lovers fight back

As many of you may be aware, these turkeys are dropped from planes flying at approximately 1,000 feet, at 70 MPH. This is not only illegal, but highly dangerous. Consider the fact that these turkeys can only fly short distances and hardly do they ever reach 100 feet in height. When the birds are dropped, they are not able to "right" themselves due to disorientation and body structure, and therefore, drop like stones. The turkeys crash onto the street, buildings, cars, and one of these days, a person.

As I mentioned, this event is illegal because it violates anti-cruelty laws in Arkansas that state "a person commits the offense of cruelty to animals if he or she knowingly subjects any animal to cruel mistreatment" as well as the Federal Aviation Administration Code which states that "[n]o pilot in command of a civil aircraft may allow any object to be dropped from that aircraft in flight that creates a hazard to persons or property".

While I realize that no turkeys were dropped during the last few festivals, there are reports that this activity may resume at future festivals. Therefore, I ask that you contact Mayor Shawn Lane by phone at 870-449-6581. The man responsible for these atrocities also owns the Woods Pharmacy and Soda Fountain. You can give him a one-star review with comments here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Woods-Pharmacy-And-Soda-Fountain/120621101325191?hc_location=ufi

We must discontinue this illegal, destructive, inhumane, and dangerous practice this year and in the future. Thank you for caring!
