Re: “Publisher Hussman profits on Gazette building sale

Glad I dropped into the blog tonight and could be useful. I hope you find other illuminating points of Little Rock history in my book.

Re: “Publisher Hussman profits on Gazette building sale

The Gazette editorial about the John Carter lynching appeared on the front page of the May 5, 1927, Gazette under the heading "Law and Order Betrayed." And it primarily blamed the officers who failed to halt the "anarchy" and "Saturnalia of savagery" brought about by the mob. The Democrat for that date also called for "an immediate investigation, in which no man must be spared regardless of his standing, social or otherwise." Despite the calls - by the Gazette, Democrat, and countless civic groups - to bring charges against those responsible, no one was ever indicted for the crime. You can read a full account of the lynching and the aftermath in chapter 2 of my recent book, Carry the Rock. And plainjim is correct, the sherriff, Mike Haynie, did issue a statement that the hanging was "perfectly orderly." Only after he left the scene (!) in the hands of coroner, he said, did the mob become unruly and disappeared with the body.
