High school finalists reach War Memorial

The big football weekend at War Memorial Stadium doesn’t end with the finish of Arkansas’s game Friday against LSU. On Saturday, Nov. 25, the top four teams in the state’s two largest high school classifications come to War Memorial for championship games.

Texarkana and Mountain Home will tangle at noon on Saturday for the Class 6-A title. Rogers and Fort Smith Southside will be matched up for the 7-A championship beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Saturday showdowns are part of what is being dubbed “Super 6 in the Rock,” with more championships scheduled for the next two weekends at War Memorial Stadium. The Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau has gotten behind the weekend by lining up hotels to offer discounts to teams and fans coming to Little Rock over the three weekends. The participating hotels include the Peabody-Little Rock, Doubletree, Holiday Inn Presidential, Hilton Little Rock-Metro Center, Springhill Suites by Marriott, Wingate Inn, Courtyard by Marriott West, Comfort Inn and Suites Downtown, Candlewood Suites and Best Western Governors Suites.

Rex Nelson, former spokesman for Gov. Mike Huckabee, is the honorary chairman for “Super 6 in The Rock.”

All Arkansas high school football players wearing their jerseys to the games and accompanied by their coach will be admitted for $1 to the state championships.

The 5A championship is at 2 p.m. Dec. 2. The 2A will decide its winner at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8, and 3A plays at noon Dec. 9 and 4A at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 9.
