Re: “UPDATE: Police kill suspect in motel parking lot

Hard to imagine how this particular shooting could have been avoided. It's fortunate that none of the other individuals were injured.

Re: “Actors Jamie Bell and Kate Mara a-Twitter after emergency landing in Little Rock

I'm sorry they were inconvenienced, but airlines don't take emergency diverts lightly. They disrupt the system, they cost $, and they result in displaced (and sometimes disgruntled) PAX that have to be accommodated. If they do an emergency divert, you can depend on it being because of a decision that the aircraft - and people on board - need to be on the ground for a "no kidding" reason.

Perhaps they would be more satisfied with driving the trip. Or traveling by bus.

Re: “Former judge Boeckmann indicted on federal charges

@Bluesyoucanuse - that's an anti-suicide garment. In some jails, during processing they will place a new detainee in one of those after they have been strip searched, deloused, etc. It's a safety measure. Not all seem to have to do that, particularly those represented by private lawyers who may be able to be released from custody without entering the jail after fingerprinting and paying any bond, etc.

Re: “Democratic leadership rumble: Talk of disqualifying Dustin McDaniel for disloyalty

I'm with radical centrist on this. Perhaps this was an act of professional courtesy once the election was over (cue the age old sharks & attorneys professional courtesy joke)...

Re: “Baylor fires football coach and 'reassigns' university president Ken Starr

Tenure generally applies only to faculty appointments (i.e. professor, associate professor, etc). Academic leadership positions such as President, Chancellor, Dean, etc usually serve at the pleasure of whoever they report to and are not protected by tenure. I've read somewhere that Starr "lawyered up" for this and I'd guess a demotion to a Chancellor position is how it played out.

Re: “Jury acquits dentist of molestation charge

@Doc - never saw it and if that was ever in my background, it was only when the first digit of my age was a "1" (it's a "5" now) - at some point the "gotta grow up and take life seriously" light went on. Animal House was more my style. I've never had braces, but my wife did as an adult for a few years and the first couple of serious adjustments were miserable for her. Later ones weren't so bad. I could see how nitrous sedation might be appropriate for a 14 y/o who is scared about the procedure in the first place and understandably might not be able to cooperate very well with the uncomfortable parts. Again, I don't know what actually happened. But it's a plausible explanation.

Re: “Jury acquits dentist of molestation charge

I have no knowledge of the particulars of this case. But I see a dentist (not the one in this case) who does adult and pediatric work. My dentist uses nitrous oxide. The operatories are semi-open and there are always plenty of people walking through the office working - in fact the dentist usually has an assistant. And it wouldn't be unusual to use nitrous oxide sedation for comfort for a procedure that couldn't be done with local anesthesia like brace tightening, and you can think crazy thoughts on nitrous oxide.

Did that happen in this case? I don't know. But it's a plausible explanation.
