Re: “A high school in distress

There are serious problems in the LRSD, but this article identified only minor symptoms of the greater problem by isolating one of the schools, J. A. Fair. At best, this article was a sophomoric effort at investigative journalism.
For example, Central and Parkview are the highest scoring schools in the district because their students enter those two schools with the highest scores as 9th graders. Responsible journalism would never assume that students enter Fair at the same performance levels as those who enter Central and Parkview, but you barely mention that. And responsible journalism would offer an in-depth investigation into the discrepancy in student performance among the incoming freshman at Central and Parkview compared to the incoming freshmen at Fair. The true test of teacher competence is the measure of how far the student moved from where he started the year to where he finished the year. This was never mentioned. The plight of Fair should be treated only as an evidentiary sidebar to the real problems in LRSD. Kurrus calls for dramatic change. It needs to begin with a school board aware that LRSD is a radically slanted playing field, a school board that does not exemplify Mark Twain's definition of school boards. There is no evidence that will happen, and our disadvantaged students continue to suffer because of it.
