Re: “State interpreter unqualified, report says

I wanted to wait until the full story aired before adding my comments. I'd like to start by saying the front line of ARS are some of the finest people with whom I have ever worked. (To clarify, I mean those who worked hard to get there, not those who were placed there) They do their best to assist persons with disabilities to obtain employment. They are not the problem.

I have been asked why I have not filed a discrimination suit against ARS. This is not a case of discrimination. As you can tell with myself and Ms Thomas we cover a range of gender, color, and age. This is an issue of "who you know'. As I said in the interview, I don't have a problem with getting a job based on who you know. However in all cases you should be able to do the job from day one.

I wish to send my condolences to the families of Mr. McDonald and Mr. Daughtery, I'm sure it would have been difficult to survive after being thrown under that bus. I am NOT saying KATV was driving. Jason did a great job reporting exactly what happened. The story is WHY it happened. Mr. McDonald did submit the letter with the 3 names to Mr. Daughtery. The names submitted were Ms Sutphin's, Ms. Taylor's and mine. I have known Mr. McDonald for 15 years. He never would have submitted her name unless ordered to do so. I have purposely not asked him why he submitted Ms Taylor's name because I didn't want to put him in a position where he would have to tell me and risk losing his job, or lying to me. However the evidence is pretty clear.

The governor's office is well aware of this situation. When I contacted them back in March I was told they had received several complaints, but I was the first who was actually involved. I supplied them with the names of the other candidates and most of them also wrote to the governor. The governor's office took all this information, filed it, and were never heard from again.

"Walker says there have been no complaints about the new hire and that she is meeting all job expectations." Who is going to complain? She has not interpreted, so there are no Deaf to complain. Members of ARS can't complain or they will get fired.

As the comments under yesterday's story and on Facebook show, people know the score. Walker's name appeared often, even though it was never mentioned in the story. We need someone who is comfortable enough to step up and provide that missing link. At the very least an anonymous letter with a link of where to look. I also call on the Deaf community. You are the ones who are most at risk. Walker said there have been no complaints. Prove him wrong.
