The only innocents in this story are the dogs. The landowner should have shown more restraint and let the dog owners retrieve their dogs. On the other side of that, the dogs owners should have pUT more effort into getting the landowners permission before trespassing to retrieve their dogs. Since their wasn't a phone number on the no trespassing signs they should have gone to the landowners house to talk to him in person. If all attempts to secure permission to retrieve their dogs failed then they should have called the sheriff, explained the situation and waited for him or a deputy to come and assist them. Simply putting their guns away did not give them the right to trespass, even if it was to retrieve their dogs.
