Re: “Dermott School District begins staff cuts

Seems like wires are a little crossed here. Dermott School's trouble is FISCAL distress...not academic distress. The scores had improved and my understanding is that they are steadily improving. Last year, the winners of the STATE Quiz Bowl was DERMOTT. So, there are plenty of smart students there and they have some great, caring teachers as well. These teachers not only give up personal time for the students, but many of them give up personal FUNDS as well. What needs to be questioned is the fact that the citizens of Dermott voted for a millage increase to help the school financially just a year ago...so what has happened to all THAT money? Has the Superintendent given a SATISFACTORY account of those funds? What kind of school board would allow a superintendent to make financially draining decisions without calling his hand on it? I think the bottom line is that the School Board has failed the community by allowing this man, Alton Newton, to run their school to the ground. How can he be maintained at such a large salary ($90,000 per year or more) for such a small district? He has free housing, free vehicle, free cell phone, and maybe free utilities. With that large of a salary, why can't he pay his own bills? So, riddle me this, can anyone honestly believe that his spending decisions had the school district's best interest at heart? Why not cut his salary and keep some teachers? Why isn't that an option? Why should the students suffer because he and the school board were negligent in managing the money? I do know that there was ONE school board member who tried his best to question Newton's actions but he only had one vote. He could not do much alone. None of the other school board members had the guts to stand with him in the best interest of the students. People of Dermott, find out what has happened to the millage money. Find out what he has been spending it on. I understand that the school population decreased, but did it decrease enough to warrant the release of 12 TEACHERS???? It seems that something wicked this way comes...Is he really FOR Dermott School District or is he getting that school ready for a different kind of takeover?
