Re: “Dugan's Pub

I have now eaten at Dugan's Pub three times: once for dinner and twice for lunch. The food is very good with plentiful portions and a nice variety. Their potato soup is awesome, and the french dip sandwich is big enough for two meals for me! The decor and atmosphere is very pleasing and caters to a wide variety, including a nice dinner date, lunch with co-workers, or an evening out with friends. It's seat yourself, just like a true pub, and during nice weather they have a large amount of covered outside dining. Parking isn't hard here, since it's on the edge of the River Market district. We love Dugan's Pub and will continue to eat there often!

Re: “Is Arkansas planning to withdraw from PARCC, the Common Core testing consortium?

PLEASE drop PARCC, and if ACTAAP can't be reinstated for this year, then all the better, because teachers could go back to actually TEACHING rather than just focusing on a test. My kids complain each year that teaching pretty much stops after the standardized tests are done. Of course, this is different in high school, due to semester exams, but a majority of the teaching in spring is still complete by testing time, because the teachers have no choice.

Another huge reason to drop PARCC - my daughter's algebra teacher told me that even though this is the very first year of PARCC, and even though her school doesn't have enough computers for everyone to take the test online at once (and regardless of the computer skills of said student), that if a student doesn't make a proficient on this first ever test, then that student will be completely ineligible for receiving an honor cord at graduation - REGARDLESS of their GPA!!!

I will be encouraging everyone I know to write, call and email the members of the House Education Committee asap.

btw: I'm definitely liberal, never voted for a Republican ever, and am completely opposed to the excessive testing that is taking place. If you haven't already, go check your school district's calendar for Jan-May and see just how many testing and assessment days there are. It's crazy!!

Re: “Paul Ryan's truthfulness problem

I've personally *driven* over several four wheel drive dirt roads that topped out at 12,000+ ft in Colorado, so I can unequivocally say that, yes, you can drive to 10k+ feet and park your car and then hike to the top. The town we stay in in Colorado is above 9k feet! Yes, the air is thinner, but with a few days of acclimation, and being careful, many places are not just a hike only for the super athletic.

Re: “Arkansas gets No Child Left Behind waiver

This is a very positive step for Arkansas. NCLB has failed miserably because it started off so very flawed. I don't think Race To The Top is the answer to fixing NCLB, but the waiver is a great step forward.

Re: “Josh Fox: Fracking redux, 'The Sky Is Pink'

This shortened link should work: http://bit.ly/Mqe153

ATM, you want more specifics from the article? Here:

"For example, even though it is now June 2012, Josh Fox once more falsely leads viewers to believe that gas drilling wastewater is pouring into Pennsylvania's waters and that our drinking water is radioactive. The radiation scaremongering is just too tempting to resist, no matter that it is 100% false.

Of course, Fox mentions not at all that massive testing of waters in Pennsylvania's streams and taps confirm that Pennsylvania's drinking water is not contaminated with radionuclides nor with drilling wastewater pollutants. See www.pgh2o.com for the test results by the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, proving the water is safe. Another 14 drinking water companies, as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, did testing for radionuclides of water at the tap and in streams and found the water safe."

Re: “Arkansas cited for gains in education

"READING: Though a gap remains, fourth grade reading scores have been mostly flat for whites...Whites in that category moved from 70 to 72 percent."

From my personal observation of my children's elementary school in LRSD, this is because practically all efforts that were previously put into any GT classes or extra-curricular, as well as for those that were performing above "proficient" levels, have been abandoned. You don't get bonus points as a school, principal, or district for your already achieving kids achieving at a higher level. You only get points for bringing the underperforming kids up to level. So, the result is that the kids who are achieving end up left to their own devices much more, and aren't challenged to perform more/better, even though they are very capable. We are creating a group of bored children who aren't going to learn how to work to achieve greater things, and who will not be as successful in high school and beyond without intervention. All children, regardless of ability, are entitled to an equal education - and each should end each and every school day feeling challenged and having learned something.

Re: “Josh Fox: Fracking redux, 'The Sky Is Pink'

In an attempt to provide a smidgen of balance to this, please read:

Josh Fox & Rolling Stone Magazine Target Cuomo In New Horror Video
http://johnhanger.blogspot.com/2012/06/jos…

Good quote from article: "While effective propaganda that, for some, will be like warm milk to a cat, Fox's latest video is unsurprisingly riddled with errors and half-truths that are woven into a toxic political attack of the sort found regularly on right wing talk radio or Fox News."

Re: “Who'll watch the gas drillers?

Roland, Where on earth do you get "found to be breaking the law a full 50% of the time" from? Really? Do you have any idea how many wells there are in Arkansas? And have been since the 1880's in NW AR and 1920's in South AR?

Nope, don't work for a PR firm either. Troll: The go-to word when you want to shut someone down on here that doesn't espouse your exact same opinion. Very adult. News flash: the 1st amendment still protects my right to have a different opinion AND to voice it.

Check further into the "violations" list. Read it on ADEQ's website for yourself. Then report back.
