I love working with animals. I work at a 600 acre wildlife park in Oregon and I love my job.

Re: “Little Rock Zoo gets 2 new elephants

oh yes a NORMA why don’t you try clicking on the ssp link on the LRZ web page it will tell you how the LRZ is participating in programs with the SSP and other ways that they are helping with conservation efforts and research I shouldn’t have to do the work for you since you are the one who knows it all about what this zoo does and doesn’t do. You think that just because I support what some zoo's do that I am against a sanctuary environment and you are wrong but I am not so ignorant as to think that I know better than the handlers who have been working with these two elephants since their retirement and that they wouldn’t know what environment would be best suited for these elephants.

Re: “Little Rock Zoo gets 2 new elephants

FOR NORMA Well I know how to spell and I know how to use links but I don’t have to and here is another point I am not ignorant to sanctuary alternatives but I am also not ignorant to what all zoos and wildlife parks that are aza affiliated do...I never said it was just the LR zoo but where is your proof that this zoo is bad and not doing anything....do you know what the aza accreditation is for? Do you know what any zoo affiliated with the aza has to do to keep their accreditation? Do I believe in sanctuary alternatives yes I believe that they are great alternatives but I also know that there is limited space and that there are a limited amount of places that will take a two ton animal. All you do on this blog is insult everyone who has a different opinion to yours tell me almighty know all what research doesn’t the little rock zoo do? How are they not contributing to a solution for these two elephants?

Re: “Little Rock Zoo gets 2 new elephants

And I have to add to NORMA you question where RON gets his info what about you who made you the supreme ruler on what is right and wrong? These animals have lived in captivity all their lives and you think releasing them to a sanctuary where they have little to no human contact is the correct answer? Do you know anything about the social structure of elephants and their herds? Did you Google it? That must be where you get your witty answers for everything right Google....well for those of us who have worked in the field and bonded with these creatures we know a little more than someone who reads an opinion on Google. Elephants are sophisticated intelligent creatures with the brain development of about a five year old child. Elephants whom were raised in captivity bond with people...they crave attention from people....I know this is hard to understand but not all animals in captivity are that way because of the zoo or facility that ends up with them. Most the time they end up that way because a private contractor or individual thought they would be a cool pet and then realized a little too late that they couldn’t handle them. Or they are part of the SSP (Maybe you should look it up I hear Google is nice) which regulates breeding to HELP the species and keep them from bottlenecking genetics (this means that they go from having a large genetic diversity to very little genetic diversity...who knows maybe I Goggled it) Keeping animals in captivity may not always be the most optimal but it does have its benefits if you want to make opinions on something do your research go talk to the people who are behind the scenes at the zoo maybe see what it is all about and then make an educated opinion...do I agree with all practices performed by zoos and circuses around the world and even in the U.S. no but do I bash on them for trying to do right for two...no make that three elephants because this is right for Ellen too at this age and point in her life she is right where she needs to be. And for those of you who don’t want to be taxed on keeping animals at the zoo that is fine but realize this...without zoos and wildlife parks there would be little to no conservation efforts and little to no progress in reviving dwindling species numbers so before you criticize the zoo look at what they do for the wild populations and keeping some of these species around for future generations.

Re: “Little Rock Zoo gets 2 new elephants

You know I get tired of reading comments from people who are to ignorant to understand that what these elephants get from living in an enviroment like the little rock zoo is a better living condition then what they come from or where they could end up. Who cares if Ringling brothers gets a tax break for their donation the fact is they donated. And now these two elephants have the oppertunity to be taken care of. Zoo's not only provide a place for captive elephants they also help researchers understand behaivors they create areas for conservation efforts because do you think that these elephants natural habitat is a safer more humane place for them to go? Really to be brutaly hunted and poached or culled? Why dont we all put on our thinking caps for just a moment and think about the alternative for these elephants if not given the oppertunity to come to this zoo standerds where before (you know like when the ringling brothers had abuse complaints) that these elephants would have been euthanized and what would you have to complain about then?!! The ADA,AZA SSP and so many other organizations make it so that there are standerds to animal care that everyone has to abide by are people so dim witted that they think these animals arent being monitered by more than just the owners?!?!?! I just feel like someone has to stand up for all the good that zoos and wildlife parks bring to the conservation of these animals!
