Re: “Media-stoked fear sets off mindless stampede

Excellent article from Gene, as usual. However, it does beg us to see ourselves more clearly than we are usually comfortable with. Gene, I urge you to consider the impact if global warming, aka climate change, is the equivalent of the horse fly. Countless articles are breathlessly telling us how we're all gonna die from CO2, and anybody disagreeing is marginalized. Consider for a moment that global temperature has not increased for 18 years, yet CO2 has increased dramatically. There is no doubt that temperature has gone up historically, but we were in a mini ice age 200 years ago. Refusing to allow for natural variability in the increases of the late 1990's then saying natural variability caused the flat line more recently just doesn't pass the sniff test. There are countless other indicators that the whole CO2 demon story line is the equivalent of the stampede, if you look at them seriously. Severe weather really hasn't increased, check the records rather than the headlines. "Superstorm Sandy" was not unprecedented, but arrived during high tide. We are currently setting records for longest time without category 4+ hurricane landfalls, and highest Antarctic ice on record. And for the record, I'm not paid by the oil industry to distribute disinformation. These are facts, easily verifiable. Lots of peer reviewed science articles recently are casting doubt on the climate models' high level of CO2 sensitivity, with more realistic numbers around 1.3C / CO2 doubling, not 5C. Sea level rise is NOT accelerating. Temperature rise is not just not accelerating, but has stopped. There is every indication that the sun has entered a quiet period, and historical evidence suggest that means another mini ice age. It is time for those folks who can think for themselves to ask some hard questions, scrutinize the alarmist claims, and see them for what they are, sensationalism.
The whole 97% consensus meme, "overwhelming majority of scientists agree", has been shown to be a fabrication, the paper making that claim has been retracted and shown to have been seriously flawed and bordering on fraudulent (putting it nicely). The paper actually showed that 0.3% specifically endorsed the alarmist view. A real poll by AMS showed something on the order of 52% agreed that man made CO2 is causing some warming, hardly overwhelming.
So the CO2 stampede would have us all agreeing to curtail fuel consumption to save the world. Just what does that mean? It means $10/ gallon gas tax to make it hurt so much you stop driving. It means quitting your job because it is 30 miles from home. It means we might make huge sacrifices in a panic, only to have it make no difference at all for a non-existent problem. If we are going to cause that much injury to so many people, shouldn't we be very sure on the science? It's quite possible those two fillies at the back of the herd are the smartest ones in the group.
